The stone in this ring sits in a clean bezel of sterling silver, and it does what Queensland boulder opal does well — holds a dark, grounded body tone while throwing a strong flash of blue that shifts as the hand moves. The flash comes from within the ironstone matrix the opal grew inside, so what you're wearing is a single solid piece of rock, not a composite. It's a ring that reads quietly at rest and catches attention in motion. Size N½ AU fits comfortably on a ring finger — and if it needs adjusting, it can be resized before it leaves the workshop.

About Boulder Opal

Boulder opal forms as veins of precious opal within ironstone matrix in the opal fields of Queensland — primarily Quilpie, Yowah and Winton. Unlike black opal from Lightning Ridge, the opal cannot be separated from its host rock; it's cut as a single solid piece, with the natural brown ironstone remaining as the stone's backing. This gives boulder opal its distinctive look — vivid colour against rich earth tones — and also makes it physically more durable than other opals, since the ironstone host is harder than the opal layer it carries.

Caring for Your Opal

Common Questions

What does a dark body tone mean for boulder opal?
A dark body tone means the ironstone and opal base of the stone reads as deep brown-black when the colour play goes quiet. That darkness acts like a stage — the blue flash above it appears more saturated and vivid than it would against a lighter background. Dark boulder opal is the most prized end of the range for this reason.
What is a flash of colour pattern?
Flash of colour means the stone's play-of-colour appears as a broad, sweeping movement of light — not a fine grid of dots (pinfire) or a patchwork of colour blocks, but a single surge of colour that rolls across the face of the stone as the angle changes. On this ring the flash is blue, and it reads as one continuous sheet of colour rather than multiple separate patches.
Can the ring be resized?
Yes — this ring can be resized. Joseph or his jeweller can take the band up or down by a size or two; larger adjustments may be possible depending on the band's design. Resizing is best done before delivery so the ring arrives ready to wear. Get in touch with your size and we'll quote.
Is this a natural Australian opal?
Yes — a solid, untreated Boulder Opal from Queensland. Not a doublet, not a triplet, not synthetic. One stone, natural colour.
Certification, shipping, returns?
Every piece is backed by Joseph's personal guarantee, ships fully insured within Australia, and can be returned within 14 days. See Buying an Opal for the full breakdown.
