Joseph at an Australian opal mine — Rocks On The Rocks, Sydney

Joseph Bernecki — Sydney Opal Dealer, 30+ Years in Australian Opal & Gemstones

I came to Australia from Poland in the 1980s, chasing work and a better life. I didn't plan on stones. I found them — and thirty years on, Australian opals, gems and minerals are still what I do.

I'm not a jeweller. I'm a stones guy. A grader, a cutter, a polisher, and a dealer who's spent decades in the Australian opal fields and everywhere else Australia hides something beautiful in the ground. Every stone I sell has been through my hands — sourced, graded, cut, polished. For finished jewellery pieces, I work with Sydney jewellers I trust to set my stones in sterling silver and 18K gold.

Joseph in the Australian opal fields — Lightning Ridge, Grawin, Coober Pedy and Queensland

From the opal fields to the market

Early on I worked the Australian opal fields — Lightning Ridge and Grawin for black opal, Coober Pedy and Mintabie for white and crystal opal, Queensland (Winton, Quilpie, Yowah) for boulder opal. I learned to read a stone before it's even cut — colour bar, pattern, body tone, where the fire will come out.

But opal was never the only thing. Australia has some of the world's most extraordinary mineral wealth, and I've chased it for decades. Zebra rock from the Kimberley. Mookite jasper from Western Australia. Rhodonite from New South Wales. Thunderegg, agate, chrysoprase, rhyolite, stichtite from Tasmania. I source direct, cut and polish in my own workshop, and sell the finished stones alongside select pieces from around the world.

25+ years at The Rocks Market, Sydney

You'll find me at the same stall I've had for 25+ years — The Rocks Market, George St, Sydney, every Saturday and Sunday, under the main canopy, 10am to 5pm. Come in, hold a stone in natural light, ask me about colour play, origin, formation, or whatever's on your mind. That's the part I love — so come and have a chat.
