This 12×7mm boulder opal sits in a close bezel of solid 18K yellow gold — a setting that holds the stone firmly at the edges and lets its colour breathe at the centre. The stone's semi-dark body gives the colour real contrast without the heaviness of a fully dark backdrop, and its green rolling flash is exactly that: a continuous sweep of green that moves across the face of the stone as you tilt it, like a wave of colour travelling through the opal rather than sitting still. It hangs on an 18K gold-plated chain at 45cm — a neat length that sits mid-collar, suited to everyday wear or a night out. One stone, one setting, one piece.

About Boulder Opal

Boulder opal forms as veins of precious opal within ironstone matrix in the opal fields of Queensland — primarily Quilpie, Yowah and Winton. Unlike black opal from Lightning Ridge, the opal cannot be separated from its host rock; it's cut as a single solid piece, with the natural brown ironstone remaining as the stone's backing. This gives boulder opal its distinctive look — vivid colour against rich earth tones — and also makes it physically more durable than other opals, since the ironstone host is harder than the opal layer it carries.

Caring for Your Opal

Opal is softer than diamond or sapphire, so a little care goes a long way. See Opal Care for storage, cleaning, and what to avoid.

Common Questions

What is rolling flash?
Rolling flash means the colour rolls across the stone face like a wave as the stone moves — a continuous sweep of colour rather than discrete pinpoints or angular blocks. Tilt the pendant slightly and the green travels across the stone from one side to the other; tilt it back and it returns. It's one of the more striking movement patterns an opal can have, and it reads clearly even at a distance.
What does semi-dark body tone mean?
Semi-dark means the background of the stone sits between a light-bodied opal and a fully black one — dark enough to give the colour real contrast, light enough that the stone still reads warm rather than heavy. On a boulder opal it often carries the warm browns of the ironstone backing through it, which adds depth without the stark drama of a black opal.
Is this a natural Australian opal?
Yes — a solid, untreated boulder opal from Queensland. Not a doublet, not a triplet, not synthetic. One stone, natural colour.
Is the chain solid gold or plated?
The pendant setting is solid 18K yellow gold. The chain is 18K yellow gold-plated — a standard pairing that keeps the piece accessible without compromising the setting. A solid 18K chain upgrade is available on request.
