A megalodon tooth is a fossil, not a gemstone — the mineralised remains of a tooth from Otodus megalodon, an extinct shark that lived during the Cenozoic Era and is considered one of the largest sharks known to have existed. Fossil shark teeth like this one typically undergo permineralisation, where the original tooth structure is replaced or infilled with minerals over long periods, which is what gives fossil teeth their characteristic grey, blue-grey or black colouring rather than the white of a modern shark's tooth.
