This piece is long and lean — 45mm tip to tip and 20mm across, it hangs with the kind of quiet presence that a more square-cut stone doesn't have. The dark-to-light rhythm of the banding runs the full length of the pendant: deep chocolate brown giving way to a warm, pale buff, then back again. That contrast is the whole story of Zebra Rock — two tones, locked in alternating bands for 600 million years, polished to a smooth satin finish that makes them almost glow side by side. There is no chain in this piece, just the stone itself and a sterling silver bail at the top — a setting that keeps the focus entirely on the rock. Worn on your own chain, it sits like a small geological specimen against the skin.
About Zebra Rock
Zebra Rock is a banded sedimentary stone found only in one region of the world — the East Kimberley in far-northern Western Australia, near Lake Argyle and Kununurra. It formed roughly 600 million years ago in the Ranford Formation, and its distinctive look comes from natural rhythmic bands of iron-oxide-rich reddish-brown alternating with paler cream and white argillaceous siltstone. Each piece is a slice of Precambrian Australia. The stone polishes to a soft satin finish and the bands run in directions unique to that piece — no two stones share the same pattern. It's not crystalline like opal; it's the geological record itself, made wearable.
