At 7×5mm, this is a small stone with a real personality — a delicate Australian opal doublet showing green with a thread of blue shifting through it as the light changes. The tiny footprint is the point: bezel-set in sterling silver, it sits close and light against the neck on a 45cm rhodium-plated chain, easy to forget you're wearing it until it catches someone's eye. A proper everyday piece for someone who wants genuine Australian opal without anything fussy about it. This is also the most accessible price in the collection — real Australian opal, scaled for daily life.

About Opal Doublets

An opal doublet is a thin slice of natural Australian opal cemented to a dark backing — usually ironstone or black potch (the common opal that doesn't carry colour play). Doublets are a legitimate technique used in the opal trade for over a century, and they exist for one good reason: solid opal thick enough to cut as a whole stone is rare, and using the precious opal layer efficiently means more people can own genuine Australian opal at a price that makes sense.

The opal in this piece is real, natural Australian opal — the same material you'd find in a solid stone, just used more efficiently. The dark backing serves the same function as the dark body tone in a black opal: it acts as a backdrop that intensifies the colour play above it. Visually, a good doublet can rival a solid stone for fire and brilliance — the difference is in the construction, not the opal itself.

Caring for Your Opal Doublet

Opal is softer than diamond or sapphire, and doublets need extra care around water — prolonged exposure can degrade the bond between the opal layer and its backing. See Opal Care for the full routine including doublet-specific notes.

Common Questions

Is this real Australian opal?
Yes — the opal layer is genuine natural Australian opal, the same material used in solid opal pieces. It's been crafted as a doublet, meaning the opal is cemented to a dark backing rather than left as a thicker solid stone. The opal itself is 100% natural and Australian.
What's the difference between a doublet and a solid opal?
A solid opal is a single piece of opal, thick enough to cut and polish whole. A doublet is a thinner slice of opal cemented to a dark backing — the opal is the same material, just used more efficiently. Solid stones are rarer and more expensive; doublets give you genuine Australian opal colour at a more accessible price.
Will it last? Can the opal come unstuck?
A well-made doublet will hold for decades with normal wear. The bond can fail if the piece is soaked in water for long periods (think extended swimming or showering), so the main rule is: avoid prolonged water exposure. Day-to-day wear, sweat, the occasional rain — all fine.
Is the chain sterling silver?
The pendant setting is sterling silver. The chain is rhodium-plated — a platinum-group finish that resists tarnish and keeps the silver looking clean longer than uncoated silver.
Certification, shipping, returns?
