At 6.24 carats combined, this is a substantial pair. Boulder opal earrings in this weight range are genuinely uncommon — the ironstone matrix that makes boulder opal durable also makes it heavier than a comparable crystal or black opal, so pair weights above 5ct represent real stone. Both stones are bezel-set in 18K yellow gold with small diamond accents framing each opal, the diamonds throwing a quiet sparkle that doesn't compete with the green colour play running across the semi-dark boulder body. These are earrings that carry presence without demanding it.

About Boulder Opal

Boulder opal forms as veins of precious opal within ironstone matrix in the opal fields of Queensland — primarily Quilpie, Yowah and Winton. Unlike black opal from Lightning Ridge, the opal cannot be separated from its host rock; it's cut as a single solid piece, with the natural brown ironstone remaining as the stone's backing. This gives boulder opal its distinctive look — vivid colour against rich earth tones — and also makes it physically more durable than other opals, since the ironstone host is harder than the opal layer it carries.

Caring for Your Opal

Common Questions

How are these worn?
These earrings use a post-and-butterfly fitting — the gold post passes through pierced ears and the butterfly back clips on from behind, holding the earring securely in place. It's the standard, reliable fitting for heavier earrings and is easy to put on and take off.
What does semi-dark body tone mean?
Semi-dark means the background of the stone sits between a light-bodied opal and a fully black one — dark enough that the green colour play reads with real contrast and depth, warm enough that the stone doesn't look heavy or opaque. In boulder opal, the ironstone backing adds its own earthy tone alongside the opal layer, giving semi-dark boulders a particularly rich, layered look.
Is this a natural Australian opal?
Yes — solid, untreated boulder opal from Queensland. Not a doublet, not a triplet, not synthetic. Two stones, natural colour.
Certification, shipping, returns?
Every piece is backed by Joseph's personal guarantee, ships fully insured within Australia, and can be returned within 14 days. See Buying an Opal for the full breakdown.
