Most opal jewellery carries one stone. This pendant carries two — a black opal from Lightning Ridge and a boulder opal from Queensland, set together in a single 18K gold bezel. Combined, they weigh 1.74ct, and the pairing earns its keep: the dark body of the black opal throws off vivid red and blue against the earthy contrast of the boulder. Bright fire, deep colour, one wearable piece. An unusual thing to find.

About Australian Black + Boulder Opal

This piece sets two distinct Australian opals together: black opal from Lightning Ridge in New South Wales, prized for its dark body tone and intense colour play, alongside boulder opal from Queensland — colour-bearing veins of opal cut as a single piece with their natural ironstone backing intact. Pieces combining both are uncommon; they let one setting carry the dramatic fire of black opal next to the earthy contrast of boulder, two ends of the Australian opal spectrum in one wearable piece.

Caring for Your Opal

Common Questions

Why two types of opal in one piece?
It's unusual. Joseph set them together because they complement each other: the black opal from Lightning Ridge brings the high-contrast dark body that makes colour fire at full intensity, while the boulder opal from Queensland adds a warmer, earthier note with its natural ironstone. Individually each is a classic Australian opal. Together they tell a wider story about where Australian opal comes from and what it can do.
How are the stones arranged in the setting?
Both stones are held in a single bezel setting in 18K yellow gold. A bezel wraps a fine rim of metal around the edge of the stones, holding them securely without prongs — practical for daily wear, and a clean look that lets the opal do the talking.
Is this natural Australian opal?
Yes — both stones are solid, untreated natural Australian opals. The black opal is from Lightning Ridge, NSW; the boulder opal is from Queensland. Neither is a doublet, triplet, or synthetic. Natural colour, no treatments.
Is the chain solid gold or plated?
The pendant setting is solid 18K yellow gold. The chain is 18K yellow gold-plated — a standard pairing that keeps the piece accessible without compromising the setting. A solid 18K chain upgrade is available on request.
Certification, shipping, returns?
