About Boulder Opal

Boulder opal is found only in Western Queensland, Australia, where seams of precious opal form within ironstone boulders. Unlike other opal varieties, boulder opal is cut with its natural ironstone host rock left on the back of the stone. This dark backing intensifies the colour play and produces the "picture stone" effect — unrepeatable painted-landscape patterns that make each boulder opal one of a kind. Quilpie and the surrounding South-West Queensland fields produce some of the most sought-after boulder opal in the world.
